The Church
Copts
The Copts are Egyptians, so their name means nothing else than Egyptians. Elements of the Pharaonic culture live on in Coptic Christianity.
The Copts are Christians and they are rightly proud of their long history and their venerable traditions. For much is due to the Egyptian Church that has had an impact on theology and church life in Christendom around the world. Soon after the death and resurrection of Christ, the apostles and disciples began to proclaim their faith on long journeys throughout the world. We Copts revere the evangelist and apostle Mark as the founder of our Church.
Mark the Eyewitness of God
The Coptic Orthodox Church is the original church of Egypt, founded as early as the first century by the holy evangelist and apostle Mark in 62 AD, who missioned in Egypt and spread Christianity. The Church calls him the first patriarch or the head of the Church. He died as a martyr in 68 AD. Egypt was one of the first countries in the world to be Christianized.
